Last week 5th July, our Stephen took on the Essex Way ultra, a non-stop ultra marathon across the county of Essex.
Starting at Epping Woods and finishing up on the coast in Harwich. In normal conditions it’s a very runnable route with some fantastic views. This time however, it was rain rain rain throughout. With visibility low and a cold snap coming through Stephen ran, walked, crawled the 82miles+ to the finish. – showing grit determination and adaptability.
Ultra races – require not just physical toughness but a great mental resolve, you have to dig in and learn how to change tactics when things don’t go to plan. From getting lost, suffering injury or getting tired due to the long hours on your feet, an ultra like other tests of endurance require a lot of mental skill and forethought.
From planning, preparation and essential kit, it’s a test of that requires more than brute force. Having the right plan or racing strategy can make or break your race.
A break from the traditional days, races such as these are a great source of mental wellbeing – when our day to day routine is filled with a constant noise and busy schedule – going on a long race can be very mediative and despite the conditions, a way to unwind, take stock of what’s important and give the mind a mental refresh.
From the open fields, to the coastal paths and serene villages – the route captures much of the natural beauty of Essex and throughs in one or two challenges along the way.
While no two races are alike and a lot can happen within a 24hr race, Stephen always like to say it’s a great learning experience. One where you can learn a lot about yourself, appreciate what’s around you and test your body to the limits. To dig deep and find a mental resolve to carry you through to the next challenge that awaits. Oh and once you get past the tough aspects, one that is fun to take part in.
While not working on PPC campaigns and digital marketing strategies, you will find Stephen taking on similar challenges to explore different parts of the country and learn a lot along the way.
